NELSON, LUCILE JACOBS "BILO" SPENCER - age 83 of Knoxville, passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2012. She was born to the late Earl E. Jacobs and Harriet Hodges Jacobs on October 9, 1928, in Knoxville. She attended Thaxton Grammar School, Tyson Junior High, and Washington Seminary, now Westminster School, of Atlanta, Georgia, before attending University of Tennessee, where she was a member of Alpha Omega Pi Sorority. Active in the community, "Bilo" served on the Board of Lakeshore Mental Health Center for 25 years, was an officer with the first Dogwood Arts Festival, and served on the Board of Junior League. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Family and friends were "Bilo's" passion and delight. She grew up spending summers and vacations with her cousins Martha and Lucile. She loved to host and entertain, investing in friends for life. For several decades she spent much of each year in Boca Raton, Florida, making and keeping new friends there. "Bilo "was a member of Cherokee Country Club of Knoxville, Royal Palm Yacht Club of Boca Raton, Florida, Delray Beach Club of Delray Beach, Florida, The Seagate Club of Delray Beach, Florida, The Little Club of Gulf Stream, Florida, and Club Colette of Palm Beach, Florida. She was predeceased by her first husband, the late Neil C. Spencer, eminent clothier of Knoxville. "Bilo" is survived by her loving and caring husband, Ernest J. Nelson; her two sons, Neil C. Spencer, Jr., and David Furman Spencer, all of Knoxville, Tennessee; her cousins who were like sisters Martha Pentecost of Atlanta, Georgia, and Lucile Walker of Duluth, Georgia; and many other special relatives and friends. "Bilo's" family wishes to thank all those who cared for her so well during her last illness. As Norman Thomas said, "The secret of a good life is to have the right loyalties and hold them in the right scale of values." She was indeed a life of loyalty to friends and family, and dedication to values of service. "Bilo" requested a private funeral and burial. Donations may be made to University of Tennessee Medical Center of Knoxville, for its Pastoral Care Program, 1520 Cherokee Trail, Suite 110, Knoxville, Tennessee 37920-2205 or The Mayo Foundation, 200 First Street, Rochester, Minnesota 55905.
