Tampas, George P. – age 78, of Knoxville, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2012. He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church all his life. George coached the Church GOYA basketball team during the 70's and 80's. He was a U.S. Army Veteran from 1956 – 1958. In March 2007 George was inducted into the National Football Coaches Hall of Fame. He was a staunch supporter of amateur athletics in the Knoxville Area. George had coached many young players at East High School, Austin East High School, Rule High, and Carter Middle. As an East High Graduate he walked on the University of Tennessee Football team in 1954. George was a salesman for B&T Distributorship for 35 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete Tampas and Helen Cavalaris Tampas. George is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlotte, along with his children, Pete, Greg, Tony, and Elizabeth; daughters-in-law, Dayna, JoAnna, and Cathy; son-in-law, David Dixon; 10 grandchildren. George's family would like to give a special thanks to the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center for all their kindness. Funeral Service will be Tuesday 11:00 am at St. George Greek Orthodox Church with Father Anthony Stratis officiating. Family and friends will immediately follow the service in a procession to Lynnhurst Cemetery for the interment. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with a Trisagion Prayer Service at 8:00 pm. Online condolences may be made at www.rosemortuary.com
