Bowles, Theodore A. "Ted" age 85, passed away peacefully after a courageous struggle with Alzheimer's disease on Friday, January 13, 2012, in Cumming, Georgia. Born in Winston-Salem, NC on July 27, 1926, he was the son of the late Archie Bowles and Mary Ellen Thaxton Bowles. He grew up in North Carolina and enlisted in the Army in 1944 when he was 18. He served with the Army Corps of Engineers in Japan and the Philippines during WWII. While home in 1948, he met and married the love of his life, Carrie Lorese Jackson in Columbia, SC. When he returned from duty in 1950, he enrolled at the University of South Carolina where he earned his degree in Civil Engineering. Following his graduation in 1953, they moved to Morristown, TN where he began a long and distinguished career with TVA. His service with TVA took him to Widows Creek in Alabama and finally to Knoxville, where he spent the majority of his career and his retirement. Ted was active with the American Society of Civil Engineers, The Reserve Officers Association and served as a board member with the TVA Credit Union for over twenty years. He retired from TVA in 1985 after 32 years. Ted began his military career in 1944 as a Private, culminating with his retirement in 1986 as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Ted enjoyed a rich and rewarding retirement. He created many original treasures in his woodworking shop and enjoyed yard work, reading, genealogical research and most of all, time with his family. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his best friend and wife of 63 years, Lorese Jackson Bowles; son Theodore A. Bowles, Jr. of Macon, GA; daughter and son-in-law Mary Ann and Bob Morris of Canton, GA; daughter-in-law Debbie Bowles of Knoxville; seven grandchildren: Adam and Brad Bowles of Knoxville, Laura Bowles Chadwick of Knoxville, Ben and Carly Morris of Canton, GA, Mallory and Kelly Bowles of Piney Point, MD and one great grandchild: Monroe Chadwick of Knoxville.
The family wishes to express their love and gratitude to the amazing caregivers on the Memory Care floor at Somerby of Alpharetta, GA; the angels at Embracing Hospice in Cumming, GA and the 5th floor nursing staff of Northside Hospital in Cumming, GA. A celebration Ted's life will be held 10:00 am Friday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bob Brown officiating. Friends and family will travel in a procession to East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on John Sevier Highway for an 11:30 interment service with Full Military Honors.
